Shift your perspective to navigate difficult conversations

In today’s working world, challenging or uncomfortable conversations are almost inevitable. A fundamental skill for all successful leaders is the ability to participate in these difficult conversations. The harder the conversation is for you personally, the less likely you are able to engage in it effectively. This course explores what makes difficult conversations so challenging and how that impacts your ability to be a part of those conversations. You will dive deeper into the multiple ways to understand a situation, the strong feelings and reactions of emotionally-charged conversations, and potential threats to one party or another during these difficult times. Learn how to make key adjustments in your thinking to better participate in critical conversations.

You will learn:

  • Steps to prepare yourself for challenging conversations
  • Strategies for managing yourself when emotions run high
  • Tactics for inviting and sharing more relevant information
  • Ways to manage emotion as a helpful tool
  • How to create safe spaces to talk about almost anything

This course can be taken individually or as part of the Supervisory Management Certificate Program. This is an elective course. Take three core classes plus three electives in five years to earn your certificate.
